Deep within the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a shepherd boy. His life was unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his herd of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the breezes among the single tree on the hilltop were his constant companions. Day upon day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.

But, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. On one such day because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plot.

Narratives of predators preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One morning he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills to help but found nothing threatening.

The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This game persisted for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a read more real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
